Financial Assistance Available

Our camp fee is set at $650.00.

Camp Hertko Hollow has funds available to assist with the cost. Financial application will be available when you register your child through the on-line registration process.

The true cost of all our programs greatly exceeds our fees. The actual cost of summer overnight camp is almost $1,300 per camper. The generosity of families and other donors makes Camp Hertko Hollow a reality.

Extensive diabetes education program with registered dietitians. Games are incorporated in teaching sessions to make the learning fun. Meals are served family style by cabin group. Salad bar available lunch and dinner. Snacks provided between meals and bedtime.

Camp Hertko Hollow is a not-for-profit entity with 501(c)(3) status and is not directly affiliated with any national diabetes organizations. Camp Hertko Hollow is a member of the Diabetes Education and Camping Association (DECA) and is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA).

All youth with diabetes attend Camp Hertko Hollow, which is held at the Des Moines YMCA Camp, north of Boone, Iowa. Camp Hertko Hollow vets and hires 125 volunteer medical staff to care for our campers. These staff members vary from dedicated physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, health professional students, and counselors with diabetes. The Y-Camp staff provides excellent activities and programs.

The mission of Camp Hertko Hollow is to:

Provide an educational and recreational camping program for Iowa’s youth between the ages of 6-17 who have diabetes.

Promote diabetes management skills.

Help children gain independence and develop a positive attitude for controlling the disease.

Purpose Statement:

Camp Hertko Hollow is dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth who have diabetes. The goals at camp are: Recreation, Education, Regulation and FUN! Campers enjoy the traditional camp activities while learning about living with diabetes. Meeting other youth and counselors who have diabetes is also a great benefit of the experience.
