Caregivers

Caregivers are encouraged to observe (if requested) and take part in the therapy sessions at designated times throughout the treatment period in order to transfer new skills from a therapy session to the real world environment.

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is an intensive treatment approach for children (1 yr -16 years) with decreased use of one side due to hemiparesis or hemiplegia. This innovative approach has proven to rewire the brain. It involves constraining your child's unaffected arm, using a removable cast. During the lower extremity intensive camp, the stronger leg is not restrained. Group and individual treatment incorporates fun camp activities while in the cast that lead to increased function of the weaker arm/hand and ability to use two hands together. Powerhouse Therapy offers CIMT in an intensive 1:1 approach. Our program is based on substantial research involving constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) for children with one-sided weakness due to stroke, cerebral palsy, or other neurological brain injury. Children with weakness or decreased range of motion due to brachial plexus, or orthopedic injuries/surgeries may also benefit. CIMT is a therapeutic intervention designed to restrain the use of the unaffected upper extremity and encourage the use of the affected upper extremity through practice. The stronger lower extremity is not restrained. Staff includes occupational and physical therapists with specialty training in CIMT. Aqua Therapy is available for one week to supplement the CIMT camp if requested.
Treatment is focused on increasing movement and the quality of movement:
- fine and gross motor skills
- motor planning and balance
- bilateral hand use
- core strength
- sensory awareness
- daily living skills such as feeding, dressing, and grooming
- Age appropriate play
